The platform was created in July 1999 by [Jim Lichtenstein](http://www.crunchbase.com/person/jim-lichtenstein). As the managing editor at CBS/WBBM-TV in Chicago, he wanted a resource that could help individuals with their research on the internet. That resource didn’t exist, so he decided to build it himself.
