Electric Classifieds, Inc. (ECI), was the parent of Match.com. Match.com was sold to CUC International (which was soon after bought by Cendant International) [in September 1997](http://www.sfgate.com/business/article/LOVE-S-LABOR-LOST-Online-matchmaker-still-seeks-3013097.php) for $6–7 million. Following the sale of Match, ECI [focused on developing](http://www.businessinsider.com/how-matchcom-was-founded-by-gary-kremen-2015-7) back-end technology for newspapers as they transitioned online. The company shut down in 2004 after unsuccessfully establishing itself in this space.
