Social GameWorks' goal is to merge traditional broadcast Video Media with Social Networks and Massively Multiplayer Online Games. The company's first product is BattleCell, an online web-based game similar in spirit to the board game "Risk," that utilizes advanced AJAX technologies to create a unique experience in which the game itself becomes indistinguishable from the social network. BattleCell introduces a number of novel features including: an in-game Instant Messaging system with automatic language translation, out-of-band notification mechanisms such as SMS and Instant Messaging for communicating status details of virtual objects within the persistent virtual world, and notable augmented interactions between the real and virtual worlds akin to the fantasy sports genre. BattleCell is designed to support millions of players in a way that makes it natural for people who are otherwise complete strangers to cooperate toward common goals in order to establish worthwhile bonds that transcend lingual, geographic, political and cultural boundaries.
