About The FIDO Alliance
FIDO Alliance is an industry consortium that addresses the lack of interoperability among strong authentication devices and the problems users face when creating and remembering multiple usernames and passwords. The organization’s mission is to change the nature of online authentication by developing technical specifications that define an open, scalable, interoperable set of mechanisms reducing the reliance on passwords to authenticate users; operating industry programs to help ensure successful worldwide adoption of the specifications; and submitting mature technical Specification to recognized standards development organization for formal standardization. This new standard for security devices and browser plug-ins will allow any website or cloud application to interface with a broad variety of existing and future FIDO-enabled devices that the user has for online security. It’s specifications will support a full range of authentication technologies, including biometrics such as fingerprint and iris scanners, voice and facial recognition, as well as existing solutions and communications standards such as Trusted Platform Modules USB security tokens, embedded Secure Elements, smart cards, and near field communication. The FIDO Alliance was established in July 2012.
